One of the remarkable aspects of depression is its ability to provide laser-like focus. It's a gift, but it also comes with a catch.
I've spoken a lot about the power of introspection, of delving deep within ourselves to analyse, confront, and overcome the challenges that life presents. Depression can be the catalyst for this transformative journey, forcing us to do more work on ourselves.
However, there's a danger in getting trapped in our own heads for too long. An inward focus eventually leads to diminishing returns. You need a strong why to do anything long term.
If our goal is simply to feel better, we're missing the bigger picture. Feelings come and go. True peace of mind requires more than just self-improvement. Our culture often tells us that we should prioritise ourselves above all else.
But when we become consumed with our own feelings and desires, they take on an inflated and unhealthy significance. The rise in depression rates over the past 50 years is closely linked to our modern obsession with individualism. Unlike our ancestors, who had a variety of external interests, relationships, and meaningful pursuits, we often find ourselves isolated and solely focused on our own well-being.
Back in the day, when our grandparents faced failure, they had a sturdy support system to lean on. They had their faith, their strong connection to their nation, their tight-knit community, and a large extended family to rely on. It was like sleeping with a spiritual weighted blanket that provided solace and strength during tough times.
But things have changed over the past few decades. Our faith in God, our sense of belonging to a nation, our community ties, and even our extended family bonds are either hanging by a thread or non-existent.
We no longer have the same level of collective support to cushion the blows. We're left feeling more exposed and vulnerable in the face of failure. This erosion of our broader connections highlights the need to rebuild and strengthen our personal support systems, to find new ways to cultivate faith, community, and meaningful connections. It's a reminder that while individual success and failure are part of life, we also thrive when we have a strong support network to rely on.
While it’s fine to work on ways to improve your own life, occasionally forgetting yourself and looking for ways to serve others and the greater good, can paradoxically be the surest way to become truly happy. The more you turn your focus outward and the more involved you become in causes outside yourself, the better you’ll feel.
At the end of the day, the greatest antidote to depression is having a greater purpose — a reason to get out of bed when you don’t feel like it, a reason to get better and become stronger, a reason to live. Men who have not only suffered from depression, but used it to drive their life’s work, understood this.
When the going gets tough a man who only lives for himself will find it easy to hide to the point of rarely emerging from the covers of his bed. A man with a purpose outside of himself, with a sense of duty, will have an easier time maintaining the will power to keep moving. Every man must know the answer to this question: “What’s your mission?”
If you don't know the answer to that question, here's a list of actions you can do:
-
Self-Reflection: Take some serious time to look within yourself, my man. Ask the tough questions about what truly lights your soul on fire and aligns with your values. Get clear on your passions and what brings you ultimate fulfillment.
-
Ignite Your Creativity: It's time to get those creative juices flowing! Engage in activities that allow you to express yourself and explore your talents. Whether it's writing, painting, or playing music, tap into your creative side and see where it takes you.
-
Embrace Challenges: Real growth happens outside of your comfort zone, brother. Seek out challenges that push your limits and make you uncomfortable. Embracing the discomfort is where the magic happens, and it'll help you discover hidden aspects of yourself that contribute to your purpose.
-
Follow Your Interests: Curiosity is your compass, my man. Follow it and explore various interests and hobbies. Engage in activities that pique your curiosity and align with your values. This exploration will lead you closer to what truly ignites your passion.
-
Find Mentors and Role Models: Surround yourself with inspiring individuals who have already found their purpose. Seek guidance and wisdom from those who have walked the path you aspire to. Their insights and support will be invaluable on your journey. Don't limit yourself to finding them in real life, the internet is your oyster.
-
Take Bold Action: Once you've gained clarity on your purpose, it's time to make moves. Break down your goals into actionable steps and take consistent action towards them. Remember, purpose is not just a destination but a lifelong journey.
-
Embrace Failure as Fuel: Don't fear failure, my friend, embrace it! Learn from your mistakes and setbacks, using them as stepping stones to refine your path and align even more closely with your purpose. Failure is just a detour on the road to success.
-
Serve Others: Making a positive impact on the lives of others is a true testament to purpose. Find ways to give back and contribute to the lives of those around you. When you uplift others, you'll experience a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment.
-
Be Mindful: Stay connected to your inner self through mindfulness. Practice techniques like meditation, journaling, or yoga to stay grounded and aligned with your purpose. It's all about maintaining that mind-body connection.
-
Trust the Journey: Remember, this is your unique journey. Trust in the process and have faith in your ability to uncover your true calling. Embrace every twist and turn, knowing that each experience is shaping you and guiding you towards your purpose.
So, as we navigate the complexities of depression and self-discovery, it's important to remember to look beyond ourselves. To nurture a web of connections, interests, and larger purposes that extend beyond our own individual needs.
Our purpose is not confined to external achievements or societal expectations. It lies within the raw essence of who we truly are. It is about embracing our fears, vulnerabilities, and passions. It is about living with authenticity, allowing our true selves to shine through.
As we walk down this path, we may stumble, face setbacks, and question our worth. But remember, my outlaws, it is in those moments that we discover our strength, resilience, and the depths of our humanity.
Let us not be afraid to take risks, for it is through the unknown that we truly find ourselves. Together, let us embark on this journey of self-discovery, cultivating emotional intelligence, and nurturing the fire within. May we live our lives with purpose, guided by the wisdom of our hearts.
Embrace your uniqueness, honour your desires, the world is waiting for your authentic presence. Rise up, my fellow men, and let us illuminate the path with our purpose-driven lives.
Always remember, you were born to be the hero of your story.
Free your outlaw.
